Diarmuid O'RiordanASG's founder, Diarmuid, is a current Airbus A330 Captain and is a Type Rating Instructor (TRI) on the A320 and A330/A350 aircraft types. He retired from the military as Officer Commanding of the Irish Air Corps’ Air Traffic Control (ATC) Unit and continues to exercise the privileges of a Swiss Civil Air Traffic Controller Licence which has instructor and examiner endorsements in all ATC disciplines.
He graduated with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and was awarded the gold medal for top graduate and a special purpose University President award for achieving 1st Class honour grades on all 18 course modules. He was selected to partake in the All-Ireland Group National MBA Strategy Competition and won this competition for the first time in the University's history. He continues to serve on the MBA Council and periodically lecture MBA students on the subjects of leadership and management. As a result of his mixed flying and ATC background, Diarmuid is also an expert on the Safety & Technical Committee of the Irish Airline Pilots Association (IALPA) which is an independent professional body representing the safety interests of 1200+ airline pilots working for Irish Airlines. Diarmuid’s primary area of subject matter expertise for ATPL Theory delivery is Air Law and ATC Procedures. Karl SuppleKarl started his career working in the engineering department of a well know Irish airline. Gaining experience in many roles with almost all of the Irish airlines from Ops to Crewing and more.
Instructing in various aspects of the industry, his work has included major airlines such as Etihad and working with Irish airlines such as Stobart Air. Karl has been type rated on the ATR 42 / 72 and is a theoretical knowledge instructor (TKI) and Crew Resource Management instructor (CRMI). Today he flies and is a Type Rating Instructor (TRI) on the Airbus A319, A320, A321 CEO and NEO across the European and the transatlantic route network for one of Europe’s leading 4 star airlines based in Dublin. Outside flying and instructional duties Karl is also in heavily involved with Human Factors and Fly Fearless which aims to help people with fears and anxiety surrounding flying and aviation in general. Alan BrayAlan is a professional airline pilot with over 16 years of military and commercial aviation experience. Over the course of his career, he has held type ratings on a variety of aircraft from Agusta AW139 helicopters to Airbus A320/321.
He began his flying career in the Irish Air Corps flying Pilatus PC-9 aircraft before moving on to helicopters where he flew the Garda Siochana Airbus H-135 helicopter on police security and surveillance missions for several years. As a Captain on the Agusta-Westland AW139 helicopter he gained experience in aerial firefighting, underslung load operations, air ambulance (HEMS) and special forces operations such as fast-roping and aerial sniping. Alan held the role of Deputy Director of Flight Safety for the Irish Air Corps from 2015 until he retired from the military in early 2019. He is trained in Air Accident Investigation from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the United States and holds a Diploma in Aviation Safety from the University of Southern California specialising in Human Factors, Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Helicopter Accident Investigation. He also trained with the French Institute for Aviation Safety in Operational Risk Management. Alan holds a First-Class Honours Bsc in Management and Aeronautical Studies and now flies the Airbus A320/321neo LR aircraft to both European and trans-Atlantic US destinations. |
Odhrán MurphyOdhrán is a professional commercial pilot with 15 years of aviation experience, and almost a decade of instructional experience - both in the classroom and in the air.
He began his career as a military pilot with the Irish Air Corps, where he flew Cessna 172, Kingair 200, Learjet 45 and Pilatus PC-9M. He was a flying instructor on the PC-9M aircraft, and, prior to taking up employment in the civil sector, he served as the Irish Air Corps’ Chief Flying Instructor. He was the Irish Air Corps’ aerobatic display pilot in 2016 & 2017 and, in addition to being a Crew Resource Management instructor, he is a Qualified Air-to-Ground Weapons and Air Tactics instructor. Odhrán currently works as a Pilot and Type Rating Instructor on the Airbus A320 and A321 fleet with one of Europe's leading airlines, based in Dublin. Outside of aviation, he has a BSc in Management & Aeronautical Studies, and a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics. He has worked as an instructor with ASG since its foundation and is the subject matter expert for Principles of Flight and General Navigation on the ATPL syllabus. Louise HahnLouise has 20 years’ experience in Aviation as a Pilot in a wide range of operations from light aircraft such as the Piper Cub, to humanitarian aid flying in DC-3's, Beechcraft 1900, Hawkers, and in an airline flying Embraer jets.
Aside from being a pilot she has held a variety of "postholder" positions in safety, quality and flight operations roles. For the last 6 years she has owned and run a training organisation which specialises in advanced aviation training and theoretical knowledge. She has conducted theoretical knowledge training for many different air training organisations, as well as air operators, providing theoretical knowledge instruction for ATPL and licence conversions. Louise was also the author of the Pooleys African Pilot Theory edition series. Paul O'BeirneWith 18 years of varied aviation experience on both fixed wing and helicopters, Paul is currently a commercial pilot with a leading Irish airline flying the Airbus A320/321 aircraft.
He commenced flying as a military pilot in the Irish Air Corps, flying a variety of roles and missions. He flew the SIAI Marchetti SF260, Kingair 200, Cessna 172, Pilatus PC-9M, Airbus EC135 and Leonardo AW139 . These roles included the Garda Air Support Unit , Emergency Aeromedical Service (HEMS) mission, Helicopter Fire Fighting and Special Forces missions. As both a Qualified Helicopter Instructor and Qualified Flight Instructor (Fixed Wing), Paul has extensive experience instructing on aircraft, simulator and in the classroom. Paul is also a Night Vision Goggle Instructor and is currently a Type Rating Instructor on the EC135 helicopter. Paul served overseas in Chad as part of the Tactical Close Air Support cell, a ground role which included the preparation of Helicopter Landing sites, coordination of casualty evacuations and emergency close air support. Through this and his extensive operational experience, Paul has worked alongside almost all of Ireland's front line services. Outside of aviation, he holds a BSc in Management & Aeronautical Studies, graduating with a First Class honors. |
Kevin PhippsKevin has been involved in aviation for almost 20 years; during that time he has been type rated on 7 different types of fixed wing aircraft, from Single Engine Piston to Airline Jet Transport.
He started his flying career as a military pilot, flying in a variety of operational missions from maritime patrol and surveillance, maritime search and rescue, Air Ambulance flights, Irish Government jet transport operations, and formation display flying. He also qualified as a flight instructor responsible for delivering ATPL groundschool as the Air Corps’ Chief Theoretical Knowledge Instructor (CTKI). Since commencing his career in commercial aviation, Kevin now flies the Airbus A320/321neo LR aircraft to both European and trans-Atlantic US destinations. He is also a qualified Type Rating Instructor and CRM Instructor and delivers training to new entrant Pilots. Paul FahyPaul is a professional commercial pilot with over 20 years of aviation experience, and almost 15 years of instructional experience.
He is currently a Pilot and Type Rating Instructor on the A320/A321 with one of Europe’s leading airlines. He began his career as a military pilot with the Irish Air Corps where he served for over 15 years. During his service in the Air Corps he flew Marchetti SF260, Cessna 172, Kingair 200, Gulfstream IV, Learjet 45 and Pilatus PC-9M. Paul spent over 9 years as a Qualified Flying Instructor in the Air Corps Flying Training School, where he also fulfilled the roles of Chief Flying Instructor, Chief Ground Instructor, qualified air weapons and tactics instructor and aerobatic display pilot. He also served in the Ministerial Air Transport squadron. Outside of aviation, he holds a BSc in Management & Aeronautical Studies and a National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering. He has worked as an instructor with ASG since its foundation and is the subject matter expert for Performance, Mass and Balance and Flight Planning and Monitoring on the ATPL syllabus. Brian MullenBrian finished flight training in 2013, and since then has worked on Boeing 737 simulators in both Dublin and in Shannon. In 2013, Brian became a pilot with Westair Aviation in Shannon operating an ordnance survey aircraft for a year.
In 2014, Brian qualified on the ATR 42/72 and completed 3,500 hours on type before starting on the Airbus A320/321 with Aer Lingus in 2018. He now flies the A320/321 on the European network and is qualified on the A321 NEO LR for the Transatlantic Operations. Completed an Honours Degree specialising in Geography and Computer Science. Brian is a subject matter expert for all of the subjects on our PPL theory training course. Paul GrennanPaul is a commercial pilot, currently flying the Airbus A320 / A321 with an international airline. He has 17 years experience in both military and civilian aviation.
He began his aviation career in the Irish Air Corps, where he served for 15 years. During his time in the Irish Air Corps, he flew both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft including the Pilatus PC9M, Kingair 200, Eurocopter EC135 and Agusta Westland AW139. Paul flew in a variety of helicopter operational roles from the Garda Air Support Unit, Emergency Aeromedical Service, aerial fire-fighting to SOF. Paul was a Type Rating Instructor (TRI) and Type Rating Examiner (TRE) on the Agusta Westland AW139 helicopter. He holds a first class honours BSc in Management and Aeronautical Studies. Brian O’ConnellBrian originally joined the Irish Air Corps and completed an Aircraft Avionics apprenticeship serving a total of 12 years. Upon retirement, he took on the role of Avionics Inspector/Instructor with responsibility for a mixed fixed wing and helicopter fleet, covering a wide variety of aircraft manufacturers and types.
His day-to-day duties include all scheduled and unscheduled avionic maintenance across the fleet. A major part of his duties covers fault-finding of avionics problems reported by flight crews. This includes flight checking to observe issues and, importantly, post-repair check flights to ensure the repair has been successful. Brian has responsibility for instructing trainee pilots on the RNAV portion of the ATPL syllabus. He also enjoys flying in small aircraft and especially microlights. |
David O'SullivanDavid graduated in 1993 as an avionics engineer. In the following years he became a crew leader and an aircraft inspector with coverage on all Irish Air Corps fixed and rotor wing aircraft.
After completing many aircraft type training courses he became an aircraft avionic instructor in the Air Corps’ Technical Training School (TTS) instructing apprentices, technicians, engineers, cadets and pilots. While there he also became an EASA Part 147 certified instructor. He also taught electrical and avionics modules in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) on both the apprenticeship and engineering degree programmes, and with the Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Enterprise Training Board (DDLETB) on mathematics, physics, and avionics modules. Over the past thirty years as an aircraft engineer and engineering lecturer he has always endeavoured to maintain the highest levels of integrity and knowledge and to inspire his students to achieve their goals in a relaxed but focused environment. David is ASG's subject matter expert for the Electrics and Electronics, Instrumentation, and Radio Navigation ATPL subjects. David O'RiordanDavid is a professional airline pilot and A320 Type Rating Examiner (TRE) with an Irish Airline. He has over 20 years of experience in both military and civil aviation spheres.
David commenced his flying career in the Irish Air Corps, flying types such as the Gazelle and Dauphin helicopters, the Pilatus PC9M and the Casa CN235 maritime patrol aircraft. David served as a flying instructor on the Pilatus PC9M, where he served as the Flying Training School’s Chief Flying Instructor. Alongside these roles on the PC9M, David was also a Qualified Weapons Instructor and Air Tactics Instructor. During this time, David also qualified as a CRM Instructor for the Irish Air Corps and was responsible for delivering CRM training to pilots, aircrew and technicians. During his time in the Air Corps, David completed a BSc in Management and Aeronautical studies, graduating with First Class honours. Since retiring from the Irish Air Corps, David has been flying commercially with Aer Lingus, flying both the Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft. David has continued his love for instruction with Aer Lingus, having served as a Type Rating Instructor (TRI) for almost 3 years on the A320. David has worked with ASG since its foundation, delivering a variety of content. David is a subject matter expert in the ATPL subjects of Instrumentation and Operational Procedures. Eoin DowlingEoin is our PPL theory manager and oversees all elements of our PPL theory training course.
Eoin holds an honours degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering and before flying commercially worked as an Electrical Engineer on major HV projects across Ireland, Europe and North America. When he is not teaching for ASG, Eoin is flying as an airline pilot on the Boeing 737-NG and Boeing 737-Max for a large European airline. He is also a qualified flight instructor, completing PPL training in a local flying club operating the Cessna 172. Eoin is also an ASG ATPL theory graduate and we were delighted to welcome him back as an Instructor. Robert DaggRob is a commercial Pilot and A330 Type Rating Instructor (TRI) currently flying for a major Irish Airline. He has previously held type ratings on several multi crew aircraft types including the Airbus 320/321, Boeing 737 and ATR 42 and 72 as well as experience flying the Cessna 210 Grand Caravan(SET) on a variety of cargo and passenger operations in a variety of major airports and remote strips in Indonesia.
He has worked in the aviation industry for 10 years and has several years experience in flight operations roles managing passenger airline operations as well as in the cargo sector utilising the Boeing 747 on outsize cargo operations between Europe, Middle East, Asia Africa and the USA. Prior to working in the Aviation industry Rob graduated from University College Dublin in 2003 with a BSc Degree in Computer Science and worked previously in the IT sector for a major Irish Software Company in both software development and infrastructure management roles. Rob instructs the General Navigation ATPL syllabus for ASG as well as several subjects our flight operations training courses. Mark CarneyMark is an A320/A321 First Officer and Type Rating Instructor (TRI) currently flying to European and North American destinations with a leading Irish airline.
Before joining his current airline, Mark was flying for a regional operator initially based on the Isle of Man and then Dublin. He was type rated on the ATR 42 & 72, both the classic and glass cockpit variants. Mark is also a fully qualified Electrician and prior to his flying career, he spent 9 years working in the maintenance department of the Dublin Airport Authority. Outside of flying, Mark enjoys mountain biking, kite surfing and travelling. |
