Are you prepared for the new EASA ATPL syllabus?
ASG was one of the first ATO's in Europe to transition to the new Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) syllabus. The last significant technical update of the syllabus for ATPL theory courses was conducted in 2006. Given the emergence of new technologies and the advancement of Pilot training philosophies there was a need to review, amend, and update the learning outcomes to ensure that the training provides all of the necessary knowledge and competencies to prepare pilots to perform in the modern day flight deck operation.
What are the key changes?
EASA has published a detailed explanatory note to the new ATPL syllabus here. In summary, the key changes are as follows:
- Extensive updates to the theoretical knowledge syllabus and learning outcomes.
- Communications (IFR and VFR) are now merged in to a single subject (thereby reducing the total number of examinations from 14 to 13).
- The Threat and error management (TEM) concept is addressed more comprehensively.
- A significant new theoretical knowledge learning outcome, referred to as Area 100 “Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes” (KSA), has been introduced to ensure the practical integration of various topics from across the theoretical knowledge course while also developing students’ core competencies. At ASG we do this already but we will now be introducing both formative (1) and summative assessments (2) of the practical exercises which we conduct on our intensive module revision days – effectively we will now formally assess and coach you in Area 100 KSA learning outcomes.
Will current students who have commenced training under the old syllabus be affected?
No, if you have commenced examinations under the old syllabus then you will continue to be examined under the old syllabus.
Who will be required to undergo their training under the new syllabus?
ASG have fully adopted the new ATPL syllabus and all new students will commence their training under this new syllabus.
In practical terms, this means that you:
In practical terms, this means that you:
- will be required to purchase the latest edition of iBooks for their course
- will undergo some enjoyable and interactive KSA 100 sessions on your revision days; for example, we might ask you to prepare a meteorological brief, select and flight plan a route and make fuel decisions, or deliver a brief presentation on an air incident or accident.

Since our foundation in 2015, our approach to ATPL training has been characterised by providing students with a bespoke, high quality, and personalised training experience. Our training philosophy is to provide premium quality instruction which will benefit prospective airline pilots throughout their career in aviation, from job interview to operations as an Airline Pilot, and not simply to pass the theoretical knowledge examinations - although we know that's important too!
We limit class sizes to ensure the optimum learning environment, support students throughout their ATPL training journey, and deliver the highest standard of theoretical knowledge instruction. Through our high quality instruction, aside from being more likely to excel at your exams, you are likely to retain this important information, be more prepared to land your first airline job, and operate more effectively throughout your career as an Airline Pilot. Don't just "tick the box". The choice as to where you complete your theoretical knowledge training is an important one, and the determining factor should be quality.
Each one of our ATPL instructors are selected for their practical industry experience and expertise in their theoretical domains. While many ATO's use their day-to-day flight instructors for ATPL instruction, by using subject matter experts (directly from industry) we can focus on providing the highest quality of training. We hire directly from the aviation industry and our instructors include: current airline pilots, type rating instructors, aircraft and avionics technicians, human factors specialists, military pilot instructors, aeronautical engineers, and air traffic controllers. Meet our team and decide for yourself!
